It’s All in the Details

Color is one of the things I’m most grateful for. Certain combinations of colors can bring up feelings and memories, or represent a specific season. It’s important to me that exact colors from your wedding day are remembered. That shouldn’t be too big of a surprise, hence the name Color and Beam.

But when it comes to details, there’s even more than color. It’s about how you hand picked everything. The texture on your flowers, the fonts on your invitations, the unique shape of your wedding rings. All of them were chosen intentionally. And all of them deserve to be remembered.

I like to start my wedding day by styling your details and giving them the attention they deserve. It’s best to compile everything you want included in your flat lay, and have them in a designated box that way when I arrive you can hand off your little treasures effortlessly.

What to Include in Your Detail Photos

If you have some trouble coming up with what should be included in your details, here’s a list to get you thinking. Please don’t think you have to go out of your way to buy things for these photos specifically, but if you have them, I want to see them!

  • Rings and ring boxes

  • Invitation suites (envelopes, stamps, and all)

  • Matchboxes

  • Ribbon

  • Perfume or cologne bottles

  • Other jewelry / hair accessories

  • Veil

  • Shoes

  • Cufflinks / tie / bolo tie

  • Watch

  • Handkerchief

  • Florals

  • Sunglasses

  • Letters / vow books

  • Custom details / decor

Rings

Be sure to include the engagement ring and both of your wedding bands - they all deserve attention. If a best man or maid of honor is to be in charge of these rings later in the day, think ahead and include these rings in your detail box before they are passed off. This is especially important if parties are arriving at different times of the day.

Florals

To seamlessly tie everything together, I love to incorporate florals!

If you reach out to your florist ahead of time, they can show up with some flat lay flowers or floral scraps specifically for your details that I’m able to style. Having flowers dedicated specifically for this is good so you don’t have to worry about pulling flowers from your arrangements. Plus, it’s another way to feature your florist’s eye for design in curating your flowers!

Ring boxes or dishes

In addition to the boxes your rings come in, you can always include other decorative ring boxes or dishes. This is an easy way to tie in more of your theme’s colors, as well as provide varying textures!

Some ring boxes have two, or even three slits so all the rings can fit in the box together.

Invitation Suites

When it comes to invitations, I want to see everything. More is more here! A copy of your save the date as well as formal invitations with envelopes is a great detail to feature.

For the envelope, you can address it to yourselves if you want to show off the calligraphy or font choice used for your guests. If you have fun stamps, throw them in there as well. Think of this as a time capsule for your wedding invites.

Perfume

Not only do colors have a unique way to take me back to places, but I’ve noticed scents can do the same. If you have a special scent that’s being “reserved” for your wedding day, honeymoon, and anniversaries you may want to include it. The unique shape of the bottles and the way the glass traps light can add fun dimension to your details. And especially if you’ve gotten these engraved, there’s all the more reason to include them.

Shoes

It probably took some time to find the wedding day shoe so we might as well remember them! Feel free to include both party’s shoes for individualized details.

Custom decor

Did you make custom matchboxes for your guests? Are you passing out fans during the ceremony? Do you have programs for guests? If there’s anything you took time to personalize that you want to remember, throw it in the details box! More is more!

Time

The last big thing to consider is time. I like to dedicate 45 minutes to an hour to styling and photographing your details. Unwrapping new items, styling them til it works, and then photographing them takes time. I also like to do a few different variations so I’m able to thoughtfully feature everything that you give me. This is usually the first thing I’ll do so as soon as I finish, all your belonging can get back to you and be used for their purposes on your special day.

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong on what to include. Think about the little things that make you giddy whether it be from the sentimental value they hold or simply how they look. Those are the things I want to preserve for you.
